AP Motorsport’s Alvin Powell’s passion for all things mechanical began at an early age; repairing tractors on the family farm, through to a motor bike repair shop in his native Wales.
Alvin started building his portfolio of experience with rebuilding BMC Mini gearboxes and working at the local Ford dealership correcting production errors (!) in MK3 Cortina axles and gearboxes.
A job at Skip Brown Cars in Cheshire proved too much to resist and led on to being chosen to head up the Southwest operation of Skip Brown Cars in Plymouth, carrying out many performance conversions on the Chrysler/Talbot range. This led to the purchase of the rolling road tuning establishment when Skip Brown retired and the formation of Carburation and Injection Services.
During the performance tuning heydays of the 1980s to the late 90s, Carburation & Injection became a Weber carburetor dealer and Weber Alpha injection management specialist center, selling conversions and spares, as well as the top line products of the tuning industry.
In conjunction with the offer of a purchase of his tuning establishment and the chance to work for a leading Motorsport team, Alvin took the opportunity to work at single seater champions Swift Racing Cars and build his experience in national and international race car and driver operation duties.
After leaving Swift Racing Cars, Alvin set up AP Motorsport where he ran Thornton Mustard.
Running former F3 racer, Thornton Mustard in the then new Ferrari 355 challenge, Alvin developed an unbeatable race car which enabled Thornton to win the championship.
When Thornton decided to move onto Classic Aston Martin Racing, Alvin became his number one choice to develop and run a front running car, which Alvin duly obliged with and formed AP Motorsport during the process. After many wins with the infamous “River Car” DB5, Alvin created a unique Jaguar E-Type for Thornton to race in the Jag driver’s series and various intermarque races which is still maintained to the present.
During the formation of AP Motorsport, first an engine dyno and latterly a rolling road was installed, which harked back to the hayday’s of Skip Brown and Carburation & Injection, and enables Alvin to channel his many years of experience into the tuning of class leading and race winning competition engines of his own construction and of those of leading engine specialists such as JMR, KSP to name but a few.
AP Motorsport continues to supply leading competition componets such as Weber Carburettors, DTA engine management systems, AP Brake and Clutch components, Penske dampers, and can build custom wiring looms for race car applications, road to race gearboxes to customer requirements and advise on all manner of competition component selections
